How to repair your skin barrier

Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin, the part that keeps moisture in and irritants out. When it's damaged, your skin feels tight or dry, and products can sting. The way back is mostly about doing less: pause harsh products, cleanse gently and keep the skin hydrated while it recovers.

Signs your skin barrier is damaged

  • Skin feels tight, especially after cleansing.
  • Dry or flaky patches that moisturiser doesn't fix for long.
  • Products that used to feel fine now sting or burn.
  • Redness or a rough, uneven texture.

If your skin is broken, very inflamed or doesn't improve, see a doctor or dermatologist.

What damages it

Too much exfoliation. Acids, retinol, scrubs and cleansing brushes, especially several at once.

Harsh cleansing. Foaming cleansers that leave skin squeaky, hot water and washing too often.

Weather. Cold air outside, dry heating inside, wind and sun. If your skin feels tight but doesn't sting, it may be dehydrated rather than damaged. See dry or dehydrated skin.

Too many new products. Changing several things at once makes it hard for skin to settle.

How to repair it, step by step

1. Pause the actives. Stop exfoliating acids, retinol and scrubs until your skin feels normal again.

2. Cleanse gently. Use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat dry. Once a day is enough if your skin is very dry.

3. Hydrate in layers. A light, hydrating essence first, then a richer serum or moisturiser to hold the moisture in.

4. Protect it during the day. SPF in the morning, every day.

5. Keep it simple. Stay with a short routine until the tightness and stinging have gone, then bring other products back one at a time.

Ingredients to look for

Glycerin draws water into the skin. Niacinamide is widely used in barrier care. Oat is a classic for dry, uncomfortable skin. Ceramides are part of the barrier itself and help rebuild it.

In the COMIS range, Multi Essence hydrates, calms and strengthens the skin barrier with niacinamide, glycerin and willow bark. Supreme Serum moisturises and strengthens the barrier with niacinamide, fermented oat and saccharide isomerate. Both have a very light fig fragrance, and a short mist puts only a little product on your skin. They are allergy-tested. If your skin is reacting to everything right now, test them on a small area first. Mist Multi Essence first and Supreme Serum after, with no rubbing on skin that's already sensitive.

How long it takes

It varies with how damaged the skin is. Skin often feels more comfortable once you stop what caused the damage, but full recovery can take a few weeks of gentle care. Be patient, and resist adding new products to speed it up.

Hydration without rubbing

The MultiMist mists essence and serum onto your face in seconds. Nothing to rub into sensitive skin.

FAQ

What does a damaged skin barrier feel like?

Tight, dry and often stinging when you apply products. Some people also get redness or flakiness.

No. Pause exfoliation until your skin feels normal, then bring it back slowly.

Can I self-tan with a damaged skin barrier?

Wait until the skin has settled, then test first. See how to self-tan sensitive skin.
